CBD for Training and Recovery

Cannabidoil (CBD) is the non-psychoactive organic compound from hemp–the fiber from the stem of the cannabis plant, selectively grown for industrial purposes. In writing, CBD has garnered praise and popularity having a lot of benefits both backed scientifically or by account.

CBD and Professional Sports

In 2018, Cannabidoil has been recognized as not having the same effect that performance-enhancing substances do, such as amphetamines, hormones, or illegal drugs. Cannabidoil was removed from the list of banned substances from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Although this is true, it also helps to check your local laws and regulations as they may or may not be agreeable to the change on WADA’s list. Drug tests for professional sports are done by specifically looking for each prohibited chemical in the fluid–it doesn’t provide a full list of compounds. Most drug tests for marijuana look for traces of THC–the other compound from hemp that is psychoactive and addictive. If you’re interested in using CBD for a sporting event, you should opt for products that have been tested CBD isolate, as full-spectrum hemp may include traces of THC. Better safe than sorry.

Training and Inflammation

Acute inflammation stimulates satellite cells in the muscle to turn into new muscle fibers. Post-training or workout when muscles go through inflammation, blood flow is increased in the area and this helps damaged muscles recover.

The inflammatory process occurs in larger groups of muscle regions or joints, even on ones which have not been injured or damaged. This is where the slowdown in recovery takes place. Applying ice or anti-inflammatories (NSAID medications like Aspirin or Ibuprofen) immediately after trainings or workouts reduces the damage to nearby joints and tissues and limit inflammation for the remainder of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) symptoms for the next few days. DOMS is the normal reaction of the body to repetitive stress in a group of muscles, as tiny microfilaments in the muscle fibers get damaged. The body may need to 3-5 days recovery time for the damage to be repaired. The injured muscle group may be difficult to keep training during those days…or months for some severe cases.

CBD and the ECS

CBD is effective because of its ability to affect the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)–the specialized system which involves three core components: endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Together it regulates a variety of human functions such as pain, sleep, and immune system, to name a few.

CBD is able to bind with the neurotransmitters that our bodies produce called endogenous cannabinoids, or simply: endocannabinoids. These are molecules supplied by our bodies to keep homeostasis or internal balance. The ECS is also responsible for keeping immune balance and stress recovery. Endocannabinoids bind to the receptors on the surface of cells throughout the body to signal that the ECS needs to take action. Lastly enzymes are left with the job of breaking down endocannabinoids once they’ve carried out their function.

CBD’s Anti-inflammatory Properties

The research and study of CBD and the human body are still ongoing and we’ll definitely need a lot more scientific evidence to make it a universally accepted pain relief method. What we do know is that, along with a combination of other methods to reduce inflammation, like applying ice packs and massage therapy, CBD is arguably a promising alternative that improves the quality of sleep to support the cells’ repair process. CBD may also be effective in providing relief for symptoms such as muscle tension and prolonged muscle pain.

CBD, because it greatly affects the ECS, is capable of providing timely relief and muscle repair when used through different methods such as tinctures or through topical application. It’s also recommended to take multiple methods to ease inflammation along with CBD such as massage therapy, healthy dietary and lifestyle habits, keeping the body hydrated, and getting enough rest.

By improving sleep quality along with speeding up the recovery process, training can go on as usual with little experience of DOMS. Provided one uses high potent, superb quality CBD products, positive effects can be expected in the treatment of inflammation and improvement of overall recovery time.
